Dell Latitude 7340 laptop review: 0.22 lb less with negligible impact on performance
After reviewing the 14-inch compact Dell Latitude 7440 a few weeks ago, we now have its slightly smaller version. The Dell Latitude 7340, measuring 13.3 inches, is just under an inch more compact. Despite its smaller size, it boasts largely identical specifications, featuring the Intel Core i5-1345U from the 13th generation with vPro, 16 GB LPDDR5 RAM, and a 512 GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD.
A critical question arises: does the reduced form factor impact performance? Can the even smaller case maintain the same level of performance, considering the limited space for cooling, battery, and other components? This is a primary focus of our review of the Dell Latitude 7340. Furthermore, the test candidate competes with other tiny laptops, including the less expensive Dell Latitude 3440 with the same CPU and the more powerful but more expensive HP Dragonfly G4.

Case & Connectivity - Ultra-light and compact magnesium case
Dell's Latitude 7340 is encased in a sleek, high-quality magnesium frame with a pleasant texture, featuring a darker shade of grey. Weighing approximately 2.4 lb in its Ultralight version, it aligns with other 13.3-inch laptops in terms of weight. Interestingly, despite the smaller display size, only about 0.22 lb are saved compared to the Latitude 7440. Consequently, the difference is hardly noticeable.
On the left side, the Latitude 7340 features two Thunderbolt 4 ports, each with DisplayPort and Power Delivery capabilities. Additionally, there's an HDMI port and a USB 3.2 Type-A port. The device offers optional LTE mobile connectivity (WWAN) along with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth support. Notably, the WLAN speed excels at 6 GHz but falls short when compared to rivals in this regard.
The laptop comes with a built-in 1080p webcam that can be manually covered using a slider. However, it's worth noting that the camera does not capture colors accurately (with an 11.8 ∆E) and performs significantly worse than the previous generation Latitude 7330.
A positive environmental consideration is that Dell has chosen to eliminate plastic packaging, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.

Input Devices - Small space almost optimally used
Due to its compact size, the Latitude 7340 offers limited space for the keyboard. Dell utilizes almost the entire width of the device, leaving only 0.79 inches on the left and right sides. This arrangement allows for keys measuring approximately 0.63 x 0.63 inches, excluding a numeric keypad. Surprisingly, after a brief period of adjustment, users with larger hands can achieve a comfortable typing experience.
Dell has cleverly integrated a fingerprint sensor into the top right corner of the power button. The F1 to F12 keys retain their traditional functions, such as volume and brightness control. Additionally, users can adjust the keyboard illumination across three levels (off, dim, bright) using these keys.
In the lower area, Dell has placed a touchpad measuring 4.93 x 2.67 inches, which offers a pleasant tactile feel and quiet clicks. Overall, the touchpad provides little room for criticism and contributes to a seamless user experience.
Display - Matte and sufficiently bright FHD+ screen
The IPS panel features a 16:10 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels (FHD+). This configuration offers a slightly taller screen, which positively impacts the viewing experience on the compact 13.3-inch display.
The image brightness is praiseworthy, averaging well over 400 cd/m², but slightly below the values of the 1600p panel in the Latitude 7440, recently reviewed. When combined with the matte display, this feature allows the device to be used effectively outdoors. This capability is crucial for a laptop designed for mobility, although it's not always guaranteed.
The Dell Latitude 7340 performs consistently well across all the measurements in the test without any notable issues. Although its color space coverage is solid, it may not be sufficient for professional graphics editing. However, with proper calibration, the color reproduction can be significantly improved.

Performance - Raptor Lake-U with vPro and small performance sacrifices
The Dell Latitude 7340 is powered by a 13th-generation Intel processor with vPro support. Specifically, it features the Intel Core i5-1345U processor paired with Intel Iris Xe Graphics (80 EUs), 16 GB LPDDR5 RAM, and a 512 GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD.
Additionally, Dell offers several other configurations, giving users the choice of Intel Core i5-1335U and Intel Core i7-1365U processors.
Testing Conditions
For our performance tests, we primarily utilized the "Ultra Performance" mode within Dell Optimizer, the manufacturer's own software. This mode can synchronize temperature management settings with Windows energy performance preferences if desired. Users have the option to select from modes such as "Optimized," "Cool," and "Quiet" to adjust parameters according to their specific usage and preferences.
Processor
The integrated Intel Core i5-1345U is part of the Raptor Lake U series, featuring a total of ten cores (two performance and eight efficiency cores) with speeds of up to 4.7 GHz. It also supports vPro Enterprise Management features.
This processor is also utilized in the larger Latitude 7440, where it performs better. In our performance tests, the Latitude 7340 consistently trailed behind its slightly larger counterpart by a noticeable margin. It appears that the more compact size, along with its associated limitations, has an impact on its overall performance.
The Latitude 7340 performs on par with the 13.3-inch Latitude 3440, which shares the same CPU but is in a lower class. Overall, this review unit does not fully harness the potential of the processor, resulting in it falling below the CPU average.

Graphics card
Dell decided not to include a dedicated graphics solution in the Latitude 7340, a decision aligned with the lightweight subnotebook concept. Instead, it relies on the Intel Iris Xe Graphics (80 EUs), also present in the Latitude 7440 comparison model, for graphics output.
It is clear that the design factor doesn't significantly impact graphics performance. Common 3DMark benchmarks often show the smaller model to be just somewhat behind and occasionally even in front of its 14-inch cousin. The differences are minuscule and insignificant.
In terms of measured gaming frame rates, the differences are slightly more noticeable. The Latitude 7340 usually outputs a few frames less per second, although this doesn't really impact playability. Most games run adequately at the lowest settings, which is generally acceptable for a device in this class.
The 96 percent result in the 3DMark Time Spy stress test highlights the relatively stable performance over time. Benchmarks show that even in battery mode, roughly 90% of the performance is still usable.

Power Consumption
In terms of energy consumption, the Latitude 7340 is slightly more efficient than the 7440, which is expected due to its slightly smaller and lower-resolution display. At its peak, we measured up to 69 W, which is slightly higher than the 65 W specified for the power supply.

Battery Life
Despite its smaller size, the Latitude 7340 is equipped with the same 57 Wh battery as the 14-inch Latitude 7440. The smaller display contributes to an extended battery life, which is notably two hours longer in the Wi-Fi test, for instance. Overall, the test device boasts a remarkably longer runtime compared to most of its competitors. Only the Dragonfly G4 manages to last a bit longer, thanks to its significantly larger battery capacity.

Verdict - Good compact notebook reveals hardly any weaknesses in the test
If we compare the 13.3-inch Dell Latitude 7340 with the slightly larger 14-inch Latitude 7440, the subnotebook tested here is slightly lighter and more compact but can keep up with its bigger series brother in many aspects, thanks to nearly identical hardware. While the performance is generally a bit lower, the difference is manageable.
The extended battery life is a plus, due to the same battery with reduced power usage.
Finally, the Dell Latitude 7340 proved to be a small companion in our test, capable of handling typical office tasks and suitable for outdoor use with its sufficiently bright and matte display.
If 13.3-inch feels a bit too small for your preference, the 14-inch alternative offers a slightly larger screen size and a bit more performance. On the other hand, if the built-in processor's performance falls short of your needs, you might want to consider exploring options like the equally compact HP Dragonfly G4.
