HP EliteBook 845 G10 review: Business laptop impresses with AMD Ryzen 7 7840U and unbeatable price
The EliteBook 845 G10 has already been the subject of a review here at Notebookcheck. The optional 120 Hz display with brightness levels of above 500 cd/m² offers very good image quality, but also negatively impacts battery life due to increased power consumption. Moreover, the new Zen4 processor in the HS series was very fast, but the high power limits of at least 35 watts occasionally resulted in annoying fan activity from time to time in everyday use.
Now we take a look at another configuration that combines an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U and a low-power display at 400 cd/m². Ideally, the lower power limits of the processor should provide for much quieter fan activity and the display for significantly longer battery runtimes, which we have of course tested. Our test device also offers 16 GB of DDR5 RAM in a dual-channel configuration and a 512 GB PCIe 4.0 SSD.
Instead of repeating ourselves in certain areas, especially in terms of equipment, we refer to our detailed review of the high-end configuration. However, there are also some unexpected differences that are of course taken into account.

Case - Differences in the cover
In a direct comparison of the two EliteBook 845 models, you notice right away that HP uses different top covers here. Our Campus variant has a recess at the top and does not have rubberized feet. When you open the screen (from about 135 degrees) the entire rear edge rests on the surface. The lid feels a little smoother and cooler, but there are no differences in stability. The internal structure also differs slightly, as there is no additional cover for the M.2 2280 SSD.

Equipment - USB 4.0, but no SmartCard reader
Basically, the ports of the two 845-G10 models are identical, but our low-priced variant does without the SmartCard reader and the SIM card reader. Otherwise, the range of USB 4.0 and regular USB-A ports is still very good.
Communication
The WLAN module is identical to the last test unit, but our variant does not offer a built-in WWAN module and the necessary antennas are not on board either.

Input Devices - Minimal differences in the keyboard
A direct comparison of the two configurations reveals that the keyboard is not 100% identical. The keyboard of our variant is minimally louder and the keys also seem slightly more clattery. Nevertheless, the keystroke itself feels identical and you only notice these differences in a direct comparison when you test both devices side by side. Overall, we can give the all-clear: the keyboard is slightly weaker than in the high-end configuration, but still very good.
Display - Low-power panel at 400 cd/m²
The Campus version is equipped with the matte low-power IPS display and the resolution is 1,920 x 1,200. The subjective image impression of the panel is good, as bright areas do not appear grainy. Content is clear and colors appear vibrant, but the panel is undoubtedly not as good as the optional 120 Hz WQHD panel from the high-end configuration. Due to the frequency of 60 Hz, movements are not as smooth and response times are significantly slower, which results in slight lag (ghosting).
We can confirm the advertised brightness of 400 cd/m² (maximum 409 cd/m², average 390 cd/m²). Together with the decent black value, the maximum contrast ratio is a very good ~1,500:1. There are minimal halos at the edges, but these are not really noticeable in everyday use.

We measured the panel using professional CalMAN software and it already offers good image quality ex works. We detected a minimal color cast that gravitates towards yellow, but this is not really noticeable. In addition, almost all colors fall below the important deviation of 3. With our own calibration (the corresponding profile is available for free download above) we were able to further improve the display and we achieved excellent results for both grayscale and colors. Together with complete sRGB coverage, image & video editing in this color space can be carried out without issue.

The matte screen functions well outdoors, but the optional WQHD panel with its higher brightness has greater reserves at its disposal. If direct sunlight is avoided, you should be able to work comfortably. Viewing angle stability is good.
Performance - AMD Phoenix-U with Zen4 cores
Testing Conditions
Compared to the previously tested variant with the Ryzen 9 Pro 7940HS, which had a maximum of 51 watts at its disposal, the power limits of the Ryzen 7 7840U are now lower. In both the Best Performance and Balanced modes, the processor treats itself to 30 watts for short bursts and 25 watts permanently; in Best Energy Saving mode, these figures are 27/22 watts. We would have liked to see a somewhat wider spread here. On the other hand, we anticipate that fan activity will be significantly reduced thanks to the lower power limits. The following benchmarks and measurements were carried out in Best Performance mode.
Processor - Ryzen 7 7840U
Basically, the differences between the Ryzen 7 7840U and the Ryzen 9 Pro 7940HS are not all that large because the HS processor offers a higher base clock and a 100 MHz higher maximum clock of 5.2 GHz, while the 7840U has a maximum of 5.1 GHz. Both chips use eight Zen4 cores, which means that up to 16 threads can be processed simultaneously. The cache size is also identical, so the performance advantage of the 7940HS is only due to the higher power consumption. In principle, HP could achieve the same performance with the 7840U.
As expected, the single-core performance of the two chips is virtually identical; only in the multi-core tests does the 7940HS have an advantage of around 20%. The Intel competition can only keep up in the multi-core tests in short tests such as Cinebench R15, but falls much further behind under prolonged loads. The MateBook X Pro with its Core i7-1360P is a good example here because the performance is only comparable thanks to consumption rates of up to 64 watts. At 30 watts, however, the Intel processor is around 20% slower than the Ryzen 7 7840U at 25 watts. Only in the single-core tests do the current Intel chips have an advantage, but they also consume more power.
On battery power, consumption drops more quickly from 30 to 25 watts, which is why multi-core performance is slightly lower (~15%), but single-core performance remains identical. Further CPU benchmarks are available in our tech section.

Storage Devices
Our test configuration is equipped with the 512 GB variant of the WD SN740, which is a fast PCIe 4.0 drive that achieves transfer rates of up to 4 GB/s. There are of course even faster drives, but these confer no additional advantages in everyday life. Performance also remains stable under prolonged load. Further SSD benchmarks are listed here.

Graphics Card
In conjunction with the Phoenix-U processors, the Radeon 780M with 12 CUs and a maximum clock speed of 2.7 GHz is used, 100 MHz less than the HS processors. There are no other technical differences, but the SoC of course consumes a little less power here. Despite the dual-channel RAM configuration and the up-to-date Adrenalin (version 23.9.1), the results are somewhat disappointing, as the results in the synthetic 3DMark tests are on average 15% behind the high-end variant of the EliteBook 845 G10 and also only around 8% ahead of the old Radeon 680M.
This trend persists in our standard gaming tests, as our test devie is once again 12% behind the 780M in the EliteBook with the Ryzen 9 Pro 7940HS and only just ahead of the ThinkPad T14s G3 with its Radeon 680M. Basically, gaming performance is sufficient for many titles in 1080p at medium to high details, and performance remains stable during prolonged sessions. GPU performance is not reduced when running on battery power. More GPU benchmarks are available here.

Emissions - The Phoenix-U EliteBook remains extremely quiet
Noise
The highly reactive fan was one of the biggest problems in the high-end EliteBook 845 G10. The Ryzen 7 7840U and lower power limits have improved this aspect massively because you never actually hear the fan in everyday use. Even in stress testing, it takes around a minute before the fan actually becomes audible and the maximum fan volume of 33.9 dB(A) is reached after 9 minutes. Our test device is thus significantly quieter overall than the high-end version, where more than 43 dB(A) was measured. When fan speed increases, the fan pulsates minimally, but otherwise our criticism ends there. No other electronic noises were heard in our test device.

Temperature
The two models do not differ so much in terms of surface temperatures. The case barely heats up in everyday use, but under load we measured a little above 50 °C at the hotspot in the bottom middle area. The keyboard area heats up to a maximum of 44 °C, which does not affect typing. In the stress test, SoC consumption levels out very quickly at 25 watts and remains stable at this level.
(-) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 45.4 °C / 114 F, compared to the average of 34.2 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 50.6 °C / 123 F, compared to the average of 36.7 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 26.1 °C / 79 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(-) Playing The Witcher 3, the average temperature for the upper side is 39.1 °C / 102 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are reaching skin temperature as a maximum (34.5 °C / 94.1 F) and are therefore not hot.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.8 °C / 82 F (-6.7 °C / -12.1 F).

Power Management - Low-power display conducive to battery life
Power Consumption
The low-power display proves very economical in energy measurements because we measured just 5.4 watts at full brightness, which is less than half of the high-end configuration with the high-resolution 120 Hz panel. The lower power limit also comes into play under load, as we measured a maximum of just under 47 watts in stress testing, but this quickly levels off at 40 watts. The 65-watt power supply is therefore perfectly adequate and can still charge the battery under load if necessary.

Battery Life
Lower consumption values in conjunction with an identical battery capacity (51 Wh) unsurprisingly result in better battery life. At almost 13 hours in the WLAN and video test at 150 cd/m² (corresponding to 58% of maximum brightness on our test device) the results are significantly better and also better than those of the other comparison devices. At full display brightness, our Wi-Fi test still runs for 10 hours.

Verdict - The EliteBook 845 G10 is even better with Phoenix-U
The EliteBook 845 G10 with the AMD Phoenix-U processor solves the biggest problem of the high-end version with the Ryzen 9 Pro 7940HS - the fan. Due to the high power limits of up to 51 watts, the fan fired up relatively often in everyday life, which can quickly prove annoying. Under the Ryzen 7 7840U, the limits are now significantly lower at 30/25 watts, which has an extremely positive effect on fan activity. This doesn't kick in at all in everyday use and under full load it takes around a minute before you even hear the fan. The maximum volume is also significantly lower, which is why the configuration with the Phoenix-U processor is simply the better companion in everyday life. The multi-core and graphics performance are slightly lower than the Ryzen 9 Pro 7940HS, but are still significantly faster than the P-CPUs from Intel's current Raptor Lake generation. Overall, there is more than enough performance for a business laptop.
Subjectively, the normal low-power display with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels and 60 Hz cannot keep up with the image quality of the optional WQHD panel (higher resolution, 120 Hz, faster response times), but the image quality is very good, especially for a business computer good, and the color fidelity is already very good ex works. The biggest advantage, however, is the lower power consumption, which leads to significantly longer battery life. Those who prioritize image quality should opt for the optional WQHD panel, but if battery life is crucial, the low-power display is the only choice.
The EliteBook 845 G10 is even better in everyday use with the AMD Phoenix-U processor because the fan is barely audible. The low-power display offers decent image quality and provides a significant advantage in terms of battery life.
There are further differences in equipment compared to the high-end version. The material of the top cover is different and the keyboard is also slightly weaker, but these are only noticeable in a direct comparison. The omission of the WWAN may have a more significant impact. Nevertheless, we can recommend this configuration without hesitation.
