HP Envy x360 15 Ryzen 7 7730U convertible review: First IMAX Enhanced laptop
Compared to last year's HP Envy x360 15, not much has changed in this year's model. Almost the same CPU is installed under a different name, so there are no performance improvements. The integrated graphics is also still the AMD Radeon RX Vega 8 and so the model does not benefit from AMD's current, quite potent iGPU offerings.
With a price of just under US$ 650 in the basic configuration, the HP Envy x360 15 competes with convertibles in the middle and lower price ranges. The special feature of this year's HP Envy x360 15 is the IMAX Enhanced certification. This certifies that the device meets IMAX's strict quality standards, meaning that images are clearer, brighter and less noisy when watching compatible movie content from streaming services such as Netflix or Prime Video. In addition, the sound quality also is fuller and more immersive thanks to Dolby Atmos competitor DTS:X.
For direct comparison, we've chosen the predecessor model, which is very similar, as well as the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 16ARB G8 with the same processor. We also have other convertibles that were launched in 2023 such as the Dell Latitude 9440 2 in 1, the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14IRU8 and the Dell Inspiron 17 7435 2 in 1 as possible competitors. Here, attention was paid to a good mix of AMD and Intel processors. Last year's Lenovo Yoga 7-14ARB G7 is also included in order to demonstrate what AMD's more up-to-date iGPUs are capable of.

Case - Still high quality
HP has only made minimally visible changes to the case this year. The display frame and speaker casings are still made of marine-grade plastic and the base is made of recycled aluminum. The keycaps are also recycled plastic, so the laptop's environmental impact is lower. The only difference we notice compared to the predecessor is the slightly more rounded corners, edges and hinges.
The base appears absolutely stable and hardly yields under torsional stress. The lid is also very solidly manufactured and can only be twisted minimally. The hinges of the 2 in 1 convertible are stiff enough to hold up at almost any angle. In the predecessor, we noticed that hinge stiffness decreases slightly after 160 degrees, but noticed no such weakness in the 2023 model. However, the display lid bobs slightly and opening it with one hand is only possible to a limited extent due to the stiff hinges.
The color is also identical to the predecessor and bears the name Nightfall Black Aluminum. The color and coating are not particularly susceptible to fingerprints, but they are not immune either. The visibility of fingerprints is strongly dependent on the viewing angle and incidence of light.
In terms of weight and dimensions, the HP Envy x360 15 2023 hardly differs from the previous model. HP was able to cut back a little on weight and so the new model weighs just under 1.8 kg instead of 1.9 kg. Compared to the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 16ABR G8, also with an AMD Ryzen 7 7730U processor, this is at least 200 grams less.
Equipment - Diverse ports with limitations
The hardware is very much the same, so the HP Envy x360 15 offers a comparatively solid range of ports. Since the processor is the same as in the previous model, albeit with a different name, USB-4 has unfortunately been omitted. A proprietary AC adapter is not available, so one of the two USB-C ports is always in use when charging. The positioning of the connection points is also not ideal, as both USB-C ports are on the right side. A charging option on both sides would have been more advantageous.
However, the HDMI 2.1 port and the dedicated full-size SD card reader are practical. In addition to USB power supply, the USB-C ports also offer DisplayPort 1.4 compatibility.
SD card reader
The integrated SD card reader delivers good results and is only surpassed by the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 16ABR G8 comparison device in terms of write speed. The read speed is slightly worse compared to the previous model, but in everyday life the differences are too small to be noticeable. The measurements were carried out using our Angelbird AV Pro V60 reference card.

Communication
HP also installs a WiFi 6E chip in the 2023 model, but it is a slightly newer module. According to our tests, the reception speed is slightly higher than the predecessor, while the transmission speed is slightly lower. Compared to other convertibles in the class, performance is slightly below average.
Webcam
Fortunately, the very good webcam of the predecessor remains the same and so HP still stands out from many competitors in this area. Instead of a 1- or 2-MP sensor, the manufacturer installs a 5-MP sensor with a much better image quality. IR and thus Windows Hello are supported, and features such as Auto Frame or the use of multiple cameras for displaying different perspectives are possible via HP's software. The camera exhibits quite high color deviations in our tests, but the webcam still delivers above-average results for video calls. A mechanical camera shutter is also installed so that the lens does not have to be taped off for privacy.
Accessories and warranty - Unfortunately still without pen
Like the predecessor, no other extras are included in the packaging other than the power adapter and the usual paperwork, although the convertible is shown with the active pen in many of HP's product photos. A compatible HP Active Pen is available in HP's online US store for US$ 94.
When it comes to packaging, HP almost completely avoids the use of plastic and even goes so far as to make the cable organizer out of cardboard. However, it is incomprehensible why the US manufacturer is not consistent with more environmentally friendly packaging, but instead shrink-wraps the power supply in foil instead of wrapping it in paper.
In Germany, HP offers a standard 2-year warranty for the laptop. This may differ in other countries, so buyers should double check before purchasing.
Maintenance - Only possible with effort
In theory, the base plate of this year's HP Envy x360 convertible is just as easy to remove as in the predecessor. Instead of hiding the screws under the rubber feet, only four screws need to be removed to detach the base plate. However, removing the base plate from the clips on our model turned out to be a laborious feat with a lot of bending. Since we were also reviewing the otherwise identical Intel version of the HP Envy x360 at the same time, we determined that the difficulty here differs from device to device. We had no issues removing the base plate in the Intel version.
Input devices - Everything the same
The keyboard and trackpad are identical to those of the 2022 model and HP has made no changes here. Key feedback is firm and solid, but the key pressure point is not uniform and is a little softer at the top of the keys. The dedicated emoji and System Event Utility hotkeys on the F keys in the top row are now in use again. As the name suggests, the emoji key opens an emoji but also a GIF pop-up window. The System Event Utility hotkey launches the HP Command Center, Omen Gaming Hub, my HP or Palette. Despite the full-size keyboard and upward-firing speakers on the right and left, there is still room for dedicated POS and PICTURE keys to the right of the keyboard.
The trackpad is a good size, but still has room to be a little larger. Like the predecessor, the trackpad surface is smooth, but the click is a bit spongy. It is also not a glass trackpad.
Display - Brilliant true color OLED display
Our test device has a 1,080p touchscreen OLED display with a refresh rate of 60 Hz. According to the manufacturer, the display covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color space and reaches a maximum brightness of 400 nits. Our tests show that the 400 nits is not quite reached, but the display is definitely bright enough at an average of 380 nits. We were able to confirm HP's claim of complete DCI-P3 color space coverage.
In addition to the 1,080p touchscreen OLED display, a variant with a 1,080p touchscreen IPS display of the convertible is also available. Here, HP installs the Ryzen 5 7530U processor instead.
The image quality of the OLED display is very good. Black content is a deep black and the colors are rich. It is difficult to assess to what extent the IMAX certification contributes to image quality here. The laptop is definitely suitable for series and films, and the convertible form factor provides the necessary flexibility for enjoying content on the table, in bed or on the sofa.
While the laptop's 16:9 aspect ratio is well suited for video playback, we would have preferred a 16:10 ratio here, as the additional vertical screen space is much more suitable for productive activities. Furthermore, the display edges of the 15-inch laptop are much wider than those of comparable models and thus no longer look contemporary.

* ... smaller is better
Even prior to calibration, the HP Envy x360 15 delivers very good rates with average DeltaE values of 2.9 for the grayscale and 3.1 for the color values. As our CalMAN screenshots show, the values can be further improved via calibration to average DeltaE values of 0.6 and 2.4, respectively.
Thanks to the fantastic coverage of the color spaces and accurate color reproduction, the HP Envy x360 15 with its OLED display is not only suitable for light image editing, but can also be used by professional photographers or videographers.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 500 Hz | ≤ 35 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 500 Hz (Likely utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 35 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 500 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 18716 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
At a maximum brightness of just under 380 cd/m², HP's Envy x360 is above average in its class. This value is more than solid, especially for an OLED display. Thanks to the high display brightness, the convertible can be used in the sun and most content remains visible. However, the reflective display is a disadvantage in direct sunlight and significantly reduces visibility.
The viewing angles are almost perfect, as is usual with OLED displays. Even from steep angles, the screen remains sharp and true to color. A bluish cast can sometimes be seen at extreme angles, as is usual for OLEDs, but the extreme angles do not represent a realistic usage scenario.
Performance - Zen 3 still the standard
Despite the refresh, HP continues to use Zen 3 for the Envy x360 15, which means that performance remains unchanged compared to the predecessor. The differences here are almost exclusively limited to the nomenclature. Otherwise, the Ryzen 7 5825U of the predecessor and the Ryzen 7 7730U of our test device are almost identical in construction.
Testing conditions
HP offers its own performance settings via the HP Command Center in addition to Windows' own performance modes. We set the test device to Performance mode in both the Windows and Command Center settings. It is worth mentioning that the maximum performance of the convertible is not reached if the HP Command Center functions are not used. Users should thus take the time to familiarize themselves with the software. As with the predecessor, AMD Vari-Bright is also enabled by default, which lowers the maximum brightness on battery power.
Overall, HP's Command Center offers four different performance modes and, as the table below shows, these settings can be used to adjust the convertible's TDP limits as desired.

Processor
The Ryzen 7 7730U is almost identical to the Ryzen 7 5825U from the previous model. This is a mobile processor from the Cezanne series with eight Zen 3 cores that support SMT/hyperthreading. As expected, the almost identical processors in almost the same chassis deliver almost the same results, so prospective buyers should not expect a performance increase from the new model.
Nevertheless, the processor's performance is still very good and the convertible performs really well compared to other 2-in-1 devices. However, single-core performance lags behind models with Intel Raptor Lake-U processors. Multi-core performance, on the other hand, is higher in most cases, even though the AMD processor is based on an older design.
In the Cinebench R15 Multi Loop, the processor clocks at a relatively constant 3.1 GHz and occasionally approaches the maximum boost clock rate of 4.5 GHz. Temperatures remain around 80 °C, so the chassis does not appear to limit the potential of the CPU.

System Performance
Compared to other convertibles, HP's Envy x360 scores comparatively well and performs better than all selected convertibles with Intel processors. Compared to the HP Envy x360 15 2022, there is no noticeable improvement in the PCMark 10 benchmark, which is not surprising given the almost identical chip and chassis. The Crossmark results also only vary by one to two percent between the models, which is completely within the natural margin of error.
However, the Crossmark benchmarks once again show that the Ryzen 7 chip is inferior to the Intel variants in terms of single-core performance, and convertibles with Raptor Lake, such as the Dell Latitude 9440 2 in 1 and the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14IRU8, consistently deliver better here. The unspecified RAM may have also contributed to the worse results. But processor performance is still more than solid and no issues should arise in daily office tasks.

DPC Latency
LatencyMon shows much larger DPC issues than the predecessor when opening multiple browser tabs on our homepage. We thus cannot recommend the HP Envy x360 15 2023 for real-time audio software at present. However, it should be noted that the situation may change with upcoming BIOS and driver updates.

Storage Devices
The installed PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD has changed compared to the previous model. The new Western Digital PC SN560 SDDPNQE-1T00 M.2 SSD delivers 23 percent better performance than the old Samsung PM991 M.2 SSD. The sequential read rates of almost 3,100 MB/s is very good and faster than all other convertibles compared. In the overall rating, only the Dell Latitude 9440 2 in 1 is 9% higher, but also costs almost three times as much.

Graphics card - Radeon RX Vega no longer up to date
The integrated AMD Radeon RX Vega graphics card is the biggest weak point of the HP Envy x360 15. In the 3DMark benchmarks, the integrated graphics chip can still keep up with Intel's Iris XE in the 3DMark benchmarks, but a comparison with the AMD Radeon 680M of the theoretically older Ryzen 7 6800U reveals how much performance is left on the table: the integrated graphics card installed in Lenovo's Yoga 7-14ARB G7 performs a sobering 62 percent better.
Currently, AMD is definitely ahead when it comes to integrated graphics, so it's a shame that the Ryzen 7 7730U doesn't make use of the powerful AMD Radeon 680M or Radeon 780M iGPUs. Ryzen 7 6800U or Ryzen 7 7840U configuration variants are not configurable on the HP Envy x360.
However, compared to the predecessor, the iGPU in this year's Envy x360 15 performs around 11 percent better, which is likely due to optimized drivers. The convertible's graphics performance is completely acceptable for the price range, even if it is insufficient for intensive gaming. The option to upgrade the 2 in 1 laptop to Ryzen 7 6800U or Ryzen 7 7840U processors would have been desirable.

Gaming Performance
As already stated, no miracles are to be expected with the inbuilt iGPU. Performance is sufficient for not particularly demanding games such as Dota 2 or League of Legends, but more demanding games cannot be played smoothly at acceptable resolutions. Compared to other convertibles, this year's HP Envy x360 15 ranks in the solid midfield, but is also outperformed by the Lenovo Yoga 7-14ARB-G7, just like in the synthetic benchmarks. What is interesting, however, is that the current HP Envy convertible performs around 7% better on average than last year's model with an almost-identical chip.

Emissions - Louder than the predecessor when idle
Noise
The HP Envy x360 15 2023 is fairly quiet under low to medium load. Compared to the other convertibles, this year's model shows no abnormalities when idle. For comparison: the predecessor came in at 22.7 dB(A). Under load, the highest noise level of this year's model is 3 dB(A) quieter than its predecessor. Among the convertibles compared, only the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14IRU8 is actually quieter. The average volume under load is also very good at 32.2 dB(A), but the predecessor's 23.3 dB(A) is a full 28% lower. All other convertibles used for comparison are louder than the 2023 HP Envy x360 15 under load.
This makes the HP Envy x360 suitable for quiet work in a library or office, but it is also a good option for users who like to push the laptop to its limits without too much noise.
No coil whining or any other electronic noises were detected in our test device.

Temperature
Although the convertible doesn't get uncomfortably warm in idle, it is almost 3 °C hotter than the predecessor with a peak of 29 °C. Temperature differences on the surface of the chassis vary in ranges of 4 °C with an average temperature of 25.5 °C on the top and 25.9 °C on the bottom. Under load, the temperature increases, like in the predecessor, especially in the right half of the case. Temperatures on the upper side are still acceptable at a maximum of 38.5 °C, while temperatures on the bottom peak at 40.3 °C.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 38.5 °C / 101 F, compared to the average of 35.3 °C / 96 F, ranging from 19.6 to 55.7 °C for the class Convertible.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 40.3 °C / 105 F, compared to the average of 36.7 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 25.5 °C / 78 F, compared to the device average of 30.2 °C / 86 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 25.6 °C / 78.1 F and are therefore cool to the touch.

Stress test
For the first 7 minutes, the processor clocks at almost 4 GHz in the stress test (Prime 95 and Furmark). The power consumption is 49 watts for the first few seconds, but then quickly levels off at 38 watts and then remains the same for the remainder of the stress test. After the first 7 minutes, the processor clock speed drops to around 2.7 GHz and then remains constant. The predecessor had settled at 3.5 GHz after an initial boost and thus has better results here.
The APU temperatures of this year's HP Envy x360 15 are almost 90 °C at peak and 81 °C in a stable state. The stress test is an extreme scenario in which we check whether the system still runs stably under full load.
Speakers
Although the speakers are identical to the predecessor, the sound profile has changed a little. This is likely due to the adjustments for the IMAX Enhanced certification. The IMAX Enhanced seal of approval is only awarded when the device's display and speakers meet the strict requirements of IMAX, DTS and Hollywood's leading image editors. The HP Envy x360 15 is the first laptop on the market to have this certification. If the technology works like Smart TVs, the convertible is automatically put into an IMAX Enhanced mode using metadata when playing IMAX Enhanced movies. In this mode, the image and sound are calibrated according to prescribed presets so that the end result is similar to that of an IMAX movie theater. IMAX movies, which can also be found on streaming services such as Netflix or Prime Video, can usually be recognized by the fact that they fill the full 16:9 format and no black bars are visible. Unlike Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos, IMAX Enhanced is not its own standard. Instead, IMAX Enhanced uses existing standards and certifies the media as well as the filmmakers' intended reproduction of picture and sound.
The speakers deliver solid results all around and are clearly better than most other laptops on the market. The speakers cannot keep up with the MacBook Pro 16 2021's speakers, but they come closer than the majority of rivals. The bass has increased slightly compared to the predecessor, but the mids and trebles are a little worse. The sound is very good for series and films, however, as with the display, we are unable to determine just how much of a role is played by the IMAX Enhanced certification, which is the biggest marketing aspect of the convertible.

Power management - Increased power consumption
Power consumption
The power consumption of the HP Envy x360 15 2023 has increased both in idle and under load. The 2022 HP Envy x360 15's power consumption was between 4 and 7.4 watts, while the 2023 model consumes 5.8 to 8 watts. Under load, both models consume a maximum of 65 watts, but the new HP Envy x360 achieves a 4-watt lower minimum of 42.3 watts. In standby mode, the 2023 model also consumes slightly less at 0.45 watts.
A comparison with other convertibles shows that the power consumption of the HP Envy x360 15 is absolutely average. Among the selected comparison models, only the predecessor and the Dell Latitude 9440 2 in 1 are more economical.
Since the maximum power consumption is 65 watts, the included 65-watt power supply is perfectly sufficient and there is no discharging during high load.

Battery life
The battery life of HP's new Envy x360 15 leaves a lot to be desired. On average, other convertibles perform 13 percent better here and the previous model also lasted 85 minutes longer in our WLAN test at an adjusted brightness of 150 cd/m². At just over 8.5 hours of battery life in the WLAN test, the convertible performs worst in comparison.
The differences compared to the predecessor are probably due to the slightly higher power consumption under low load. The 4 Wh larger battery is unfortunately not enough for a better result overall with the higher consumption rates. However, even a 55 Wh battery is still comparatively small for a 15-inch laptop. At maximum brightness, the battery life drops to 5 hours and 43 minutes in the WLAN test drops to 5 hours and 43 minutes. The convertible still manages 107 minutes under load in Battery Eater and maximum brightness.
Depending on the load, the battery of HP's Envy x360 15 is not enough for a full working day.

Pros
Cons
Verdict - Good configuration, solid performance, but weaknesses in the graphics chip and battery life
Last year we criticized HP for foregoing powerful AMD iGPUs in refreshing its convertible. This criticism is even more justified this year. Last year the refresh included optimizations to the interior, design and processor, but this year only the edges of the chassis have been rounded off a little and an almost identical processor is used. A slightly better M.2 SSD and a slightly more up-to-date WLAN module are installed. The battery life is even worse. The OLED display is of course a massive upgrade, but was already available in certain configurations on the predecessor.
The Ryzen 7 7730 CPU is more up to date, but is identical to the R7 5825U from last year. The performance is still good for 2023 and can keep up with competing devices, but could be significantly better with the Ryzen 7 6800U or Ryzen 7 7840U configuration variants.
The choice of processor also affects the range of ports and so USB-4 has to be omitted. Otherwise, the HP Envy x360 is really well equipped and, apart from the positioning of the two USB-C ports, is very satisfactory.
Although the convertible performs very well in principle and is a strong package overall, HP has failed to create a real upgrade over the previous model.
The decent webcam is still on board and is significantly better than most of the convertible's competitors. The absolute highlight of our test device is definitely the OLED display. With an unusually high brightness for OLED displays and really good coverage of the sRGB, AdobeRGB and DCI-P3 color spaces, the convertible is also suitable for professional photo- and video editing.
HP puts a lot of emphasis on the IMAX Enhanced certification when promoting the new HP Envy x360 15, and indeed the new HP Envy is the first convertible or laptop to receive the distinction, which was previously only found on televisions. The convertible is also very well suited to video content, and IMAX films with the IMAX Enhanced mode active look extremely good. However, we are unable to determine just how much of an impact the IMAX Enhanced mode has on the picture and sound quality in these scenarios.
Price and availability
In HP's US webstore, a configuration identical to our test variant is priced at $1,199.99.
