With the announcement of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti, the 16-GB model was simultaneously presented. However, this model took a little longer to start appearing on shelves. There was already quite a bit of criticism when it was announced, as Nvidia stayed true to its VRAM culture with the well-known 8-GB model. In order to mitigate the criticism a little bit, Nvidia also announced the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti with double the memory.
We will be taking a look at this model precisely, the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX. We will also be comparing it to the competition and especially to the 8-GB model based on the same graphics chip. In general, all their tech specs are the same when it comes to shader units. This makes it clear that the 16-GB model won't offer more raw power. Smaller deviations can be found in its maximum power consumption, which now lies at 165 watts. This is only 5 watts more than on the 8-GB model. The previous test sample was also from KFA2 (KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX) which, visually, doesn't look any different to the 16-GB model. As a result, they have the exact same advantages and disadvantages. With a length of 25 centimetres, the graphics card is relatively compact and its 2-slot cooler is enough to cool the component effectively. It continues to rely on a 6+2 Pin PCIe connection as a power supply.
When it comes to external connections, the graphics card continues to forgo DisplayPort 2.1. Only AMD takes the lead here and has equipped its RX 7000 models with this modern connection. As a result, displays can be connected via HDMI 2.1a (1x) and/or DisplayPort 1.4a (3x).

Details about the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB
Different to the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti with 8 GB VRAM, there is no Nvidia Founders Edition of the 16-GB model. This means you can get a range of models from well-known board partners only, including KFA2. Both models of the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti are fitted with the exact same graphics chip and there is also no difference in clock rates. As already mentioned, there is twice the amount of VRAM, although its clock rates remain the same. Its relatively tight memory interface (128 bits) is compensated by its significantly increased L2 cache compared to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. Here, the bigger VRAM should also provide a little more relief, as more picture data can be processed directly in the graphics card and it doesn't have to be relocated.
Via the tuning tool "Xtreme Tuner Plus", the OC profile can additionally be activated, meaning the graphics card has access to 15 MHz more (2,655 MHz boost clock). In practice, this shouldn't be terribly noticeable, as the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB easily managed to exceed the stated boost clock during our gaming tests.
Xtreme Tuner Plus - Monitoring and control via a smartphone
KFA2's own tool, "Xtreme Tuner Plus", is a program which lets you monitor the graphics card. The program can also be used to manually overclock the graphics card. In order to do so, the GPU and VRAM's Power Limits can be changed. Furthermore, you can use the tool to change the lighting effects and regulate the fan speed.
If you don't want to make these changes directly on the system, then you can also use your smartphone. In order to let your phone access the hardware, you just have to make sure that both devices (PC and phone) are connected to the same network.
Synthetic benchmarks
In the synthetic benchmarks, the 16-GB model of the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX couldn't differentiate itself from the 8-GB version. Both graphics cards were the same speed, leading to the graphics card with more VRAM having no advantage here. It beat an AMD Radeon RX 7600's performance rating by 11 percentage points. When directly comparing both of the KFA2 models, the 16-GB model even did slightly worse. This slight disadvantage may also be a result of the variances that arise when performing benchmark checks. Its lead ahead of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is also minor, which is a little disappointing.
However, one positive is its performance-to-power-consumption ratio. Compared to the predecessor model, the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB uses considerably less power.

Professional uses
More graphics memory is generally good when it comes to 3D uses. However, even during the three SPECvierperf tests, the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB couldn't profit from it. The models from AMD seem to be much more viable alternatives. The AMD Radeon RX 7600 already did much better than our test sample. For commercial uses, the graphics card also isn't the first choice, as AMD and Nvidia both offer specialized models which can achieve much better performance thanks to better driver adjustments in combination with the uses. One example of this can be seen in the Nvidia Titan RTX which achieved 200 percentage points more during the rendering tests.

Gaming benchmarks
After the synthetic tests gave us our first look at the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB's performance, it didn't surprise us when taking a look at our test sample's gaming performance. It seems to be getting more and more difficult for the 16-GB model to show itself in a good light. From a purely objective standpoint, the model was just as fast during the gaming tests - but at times, it was even slower. Compared to AMD, the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB had it easy and was always the faster model. Compared with AMD's 6000 series, it even achieved a performance similar to the AMD Radeon RX 6750 XT. However, we already saw this on the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 8 GB.
We had to actively search for games which can benefit from larger VRAM. In 1,080p, we only saw a noticeable difference in The Last of Us, although it takes playing games at 2,160p for the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB's gaming abilities to become noticeably better. The best example of this is Far Cry 6. Here, we measured a whopping 156 per cent increase in performance. When more than 8 GB VRAM was needed, the average frame rates collapsed rigorously. The 16-GB sample remedied this and we finally recorded a well-playable 53 FPS. Cumulatively, we noted a performance gain of 15 per cent in the eight games.
The FPS-low values show that it does sometimes make sense to go for the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB. The P1 values (the 1st percentile or 1 per cent low), represent the worst 1 per cent of the documented frame rates. This value is significantly better in the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB. This results in a subjectively smoother gaming experience because micro-stutters due to FPS fluctuations are less pronounced. As a result, we can note the biggest advantage of the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB over its 8 GB counterpart here.

Raytracing, DLSS and FG (Frame Generation)
After the search for the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB's advantages being like finding a needle in a haystack, we noted a further advantage for the 16-GB model. We have often spoken of updates within the Ada Lovelace Generation with regard to raytracing and DLSS. These are also available for the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB and when game developers implement these features, it leads to a big boost in frame rates. These features are, among other things, memory-heavy, which means that the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB can achieve much better frame rates. However, you can't expect too much from a mid-range model. With activated raytracing, the frame rates drop noticeably. As a result, this feature is only worthwhile when at least triple-digit frame rates can be achieved without raytracing. Again, we noted significantly better P1 values, which makes gameplay appear smoother.
If you like to play about with activated raytracing, then you might actually want to think about going for the 16-GB model of the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX. Furthermore, we recommend a combination of activated raytracing and DLSS in order to best compensate for lost performance. Unfortunately, there are currently only a limited amount of games which support these features.

Emissions - good cooling but far from quiet
Noise emissions
The same as on the 8-GB model, the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB features two 102-millimetre axial fans which can cool the graphics card effectively. Together with the RGB lighting, the graphics card looks the part - as long as a suitable case is found. The fan design stays very true to KFA2 - we noted a similar design on the high-end models of the RTX 4000 models.
In 2D use, the fans remain still and the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 runs silently. Only under load do the fans begin to spin - which becomes audible under full load. With emissions of 42 dB(A), our test sample is a bit louder than the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX with 8 GB VRAM.

Temperatures
Temperatures never became an issue for the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB. Even with the system closed, the graphics card had access to its full performance. During the stress test, we noted a GPU hot-spot temperature of 81.8 °C. The limit is 83 °C, meaning there is still a little room to breathe. However, it should be mentioned that the graphics card was exposed to the most difficult conditions in our vertical test scenario. An active case ventilation is not installed, which prevents the thermal limit from being reached under relatively bad conditions such as these. For this reason, lower temperatures should be achieved in a PC case with better ventilation.
Power consumption
As previously mentioned, the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB's power consumption has risen by 5 watts compared to the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 8 GB. The limit was never surpassed, meaning our test sample can be classed as quite an efficient graphics card. While gaming, we measured an average power consumption of 310 watts. When testing the AMD Radeon RX 7600, we noted much higher results of 346 watts. This, again, shows that Nvidia is much more advanced when it comes to efficiency and even with RDNA3, AMD can't keep up.

Verdict - The better RTX 4060 Ti with 16 GB is too expensive
The KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB is a good start to help offer more VRAM within the mid-range field. The calls for this were loud and Nvidia heard them - but their plan has only partially succeeded. Taking a fleeting glance at the results would make you think that the 8-GB model is even better at times. In order to figure out the differences, you always have to take a much closer look at the results - with bigger VRAM, you are much less likely to hit the limit that causes annoying micro-stutters to be common. This is prevented quite well by the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB and at the end of the day, we always noted much calmer and smoother gameplay. Its attempt to bring a 1,080p graphics card to the masses is much better achieved by the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB, as its more generous VRAM is now a little bit more future-proof. At the time of writing, most games can be played in Full HD and with maximum details. The KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB tackles VRAM-guzzlers much better, which is further solidified through better P1 values.
The advantages offered by the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB are only seen at second glance. In order to be a success for potential buyers, the price has to be right as well.
The biggest issue lies in its price, as at US$530, the 16-GB version of the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX is about US$100 more than the 8-GB model. If you aren't prepared to pay this price, then you can also go for an AMD Radeon RX 6750 XT. The slightly older model from AMD showed comparable performance during our gaming tests and benefits from 12 GB VRAM. In addition, there are lots of models of the AMD Radeon RX 6750 XT which can be found for well under US$420. You just have to be aware of its disadvantages, such as its worse raytracing performance and slightly higher power consumption. In view of this, the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX 16 GB might find it a little harder to end up in people's baskets.
Its features such as raytracing and DLSS are good and work well in practice. However, there isn't too large a number of games which currently support DLSS 3.
