Lenovo ThinkPad E16 G1 Intel review: Core i5 is neck-to-neck with AMD Ryzen 7
The ThinkPad E series consists of affordable models for business users in contrast to the more luxurious ThinkPad T series or sharper ThinkPad X series. This year marks the introduction of the 16-inch ThinkPad E16 family to complement the existing 14-inch ThinkPad E14 and 15-inch ThinkPad E15 options. Two versions of the ThinkPad E16 are available at launch with either Intel or AMD processors. We recently reviewed the ThinkPad E16 AMD Ryzen 7 version and so now is the time to check out the ThinkPad E16 Intel Core i5 version to see how their differences stack up against one another.
Our specific Intel review unit is a lower-end configuration with the Core i5-1335U and 1200p touchscreen for approximately $800 to $900 USD retail. Other configurations may go up to the Core i7-1365U, Core i7-1360P, or even the Core i7-13700H with discrete GeForce MX550 graphics and a higher resolution 1600p display for much higher prices. Such options are not yet available at the time of publishing.
Alternatives to the ThinkPad E16 include other 16-inch multimedia or business laptops like the Acer TravelMate P4, Samsung Galaxy Book3 Pro 16, or LG Gram 16. We recommend checking out our existing review on the ThinkPad E16 G1 AMD version as our Intel version shares the same chassis design and physical features.

Case
The easiest way to identify an Intel version from an AMD version is to look for the Thunderbolt logo along the left edge. Thunderbolt is only supported on the Intel versions as the current AMD versions do not ship with USB4.
Communication
Webcam
Maintenance
Both the Intel and AMD versions support up to two M.2 SSDs each. The Intel version, however, only supports drives of up to 42 mm in length whereas the AMD version can support one drive of up to 80 mm. This is similar to what we observed between the smaller 14-inch ThinkPad E14 G5 Intel and AMD versions.
Warranty
A one-year limited manufacturer warranty applies if purchased in the US. Higher-end ThinkPad models from the T series or X series typically come with three-year warranties as standard in comparison.
Display
Four IPS matte options are available as follows:
- 1200p, 60% sRGB, 300 nits, 60 Hz, non-touch
- 1200p, 60% sRGB, 300 nits, 60 Hz, touch
- 1200p, 100% sRGB, 300 nits, 60 Hz, non-touch
- 1600p, 100% sRGB, 400 nits, 60 Hz, non-touch
Our specific Intel review unit comes with the bolded option above whereas our AMD unit comes with the 1600p option. Image quality is like night and day between our Intel and AMD units as the latter appears sharper, more vibrant, and with faster response times for a noticeably better viewing experience. We recommend avoiding our specific panel option unless if the touchscreen functionality is a must.

Calibrating the display with an X-Rite colorimeter would improve average grayscale and color deltaE values slightly from 3.2 and 3.73 to 2.2 and 2.03, respectively. However, colors still become increasingly inaccurate at higher saturation levels no matter what due to the narrow sRGB color coverage mentioned above.

Testing Conditions
We set Windows to Performance mode prior to running the benchmarks below. Users should become familiar with the built-in Vantage software as it is the central hub for Lenovo-specific features and BIOS updates.
Processor
Unlike most other Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs, the Core i5-1335U performs much more closely to the pricier Core i7-1355U than one might initially expect. Benchmarks rank our Core i5-1335U just 5 to 10 percent slower than the Core i7-1355U meaning you can save yourself several hundred dollars by opting for the Core i5 configuration if you don't mind the minor CPU performance deficit. The biggest reason for selecting the Core i7 option is instead related to its integrated graphics as demonstrated by the GPU Performance section below.
When compared to the Ryzen 7 7730U version, our Intel Core i5 version is about 10 to 15 percent slower in multi-thread performance while the opposite is true in regards to single-thread performance.

Our integrated Iris Xe 80 EUs is performing where we expect it to be relative to other laptops with the same GPU if not slightly slower. Upgrading to the Core i7 configuration with the Iris Xe 96 EUs or GeForce MX550 would increase performance by about 25 to 30 percent or 70 to 100 percent, respectively.
Be sure to configure with dual-channel RAM or else iGPU performance suffers significantly.

System Noise
Fan noise is generally louder than what we experienced on the Ryzen 7 version likely owing to the higher power demands of our Intel version. The AMD version is able to remain quieter for longer periods when stress is introduced. When running 3DMark 06, for example, fan noise would remain relatively quiet at just under 25 dB(A) compared to almost 33 dB(A) on our Intel version.

Temperature
Surface temperatures are warmer on the left half of the laptop than the right simply due to the positioning of the processor and cooling solution inside. Hot spots when running demanding loads can reach up to 38 C and 45 C on the top and bottom sides, respectively, as shown by the temperature maps below. Results are actually a few degrees C cooler than what we recorded on the AMD configuration perhaps due to the louder fan mentioned above. While the temperature differences between the warmer and cooler quadrants are noticeable to the touch, they're not uncomfortable or distracting during usage.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 44 °C / 111 F, compared to the average of 34.2 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 50.4 °C / 123 F, compared to the average of 36.7 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 24.3 °C / 76 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 27 °C / 80.6 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.7 °C / 81.9 F (+0.7 °C / 1.3 F).

Stress Test
When running Prime95, the CPU would spike to 4 GHz, 50 W, and 94 C for only the first few seconds before steadily falling and stabilizing at 2.4 GHz, 86 C, and 28 W as peak Turbo Boost is unsustainable. The high 80 C range is quite warm for a 16-inch Core U-series laptop. Running this same test on the Acer Swift Edge 16 with the Ryzen 7 7840U, for example, would cause the CPU to stabilize at just 64 C in comparison.

Power Consumption
The Intel system is generally more demanding than the AMD version when running CPU-intensive tasks even though the AMD processor is generally faster than Intel when it comes to multi-threaded loads. When initiating CineBench R15 xT, for example, consumption would be as high as 68 W on our Intel unit compared to just 45 W on the AMD unit. Similar results can be observed when running Prime95 as well. Overall consumption when idling on desktop or when running GPU-intensive tasks like Witcher 3 is otherwise about the same between the Intel and AMD versions.

Battery Life
The model comes with two battery capacity options: 47 Wh and 57 Wh. Our Intel unit comes with the lesser option whereas our AMD unit ships with the larger one. Battery life is only about half as long as on our AMD unit for only 5 hours of real-world browsing usage. For a 16-inch laptop, the 47 Wh option is much smaller than expected and a definite cut corner.
Charging from empty to full capacity is fortunately quite fast at just over one hour.

Verdict — AMD Wins Big On Battery Life
Opting for the Intel ThinkPad E16 G1 instead of AMD will net you Thunderbolt support, faster single-thread performance, and faster integrated graphics performance assuming you select the Core i7-1355U. However, these benefits arguably pale in comparison to what the AMD version offers: noticeably longer battery life, higher performance-per-watt, faster multi-thread performance, and support for M.2 2280 SSDs. Thus, you'll have to really value the superior docking capabilities of the Intel version if you decide to skip the AMD options.
If you don't plan on connecting Thunderbolt monitors or eGPUs to your ThinkPad E16 G1, then the AMD versions can offer both longer battery life and faster multi-thread performance than the Intel options for about the same price.
Regardless of version preference, users will still want to be careful about the display and battery size before purchasing. Unfortunately, not every retailer lists color coverage or battery capacity and so it is easy to accidentally purchase a configuration with the lower-end display or smaller 47 Wh battery pack. We recommend aiming for full sRGB coverage and the larger 57 Wh battery pack if possible as they are significant leaps over the base configuration.
Price and Availability
Lenovo is now shipping the ThinkPad E16 G1 starting at $638 USD for the Core i3 configuration or $724 USD for the Core i5 configuration.
