Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga G4 Laptop Review: Convertible with long battery life and weak performance
As so often with ThinkPads, the ThinkPad Yoga laptops have a long history under their belt: The origins of this series go back to the year 2005, when Lenovo as the new owner of the ThinkPad brand introduced the ThinkPad X41 Tablet. These ThinkPad X Tablets with a rotating hinge were made until 2012, being replaced in 2013 by the ThinkPad Yoga line with 360 degree hinges.
The newest Thinkpad Yoga is the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 4, a convertible for business customers. In Lenovo's ThinkPad Yoga lineup, it occupies the mid-tier section, being placed between the affordable ThinkPad L13 Yoga G4 and the more expensive ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 8. It could be the ideal medium between expensive and affordable.

Chassis: robust magnesium hull for the X ThinkPad
In comparison with the ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 3, Lenovo has completely renewed the design, creating a completely new chassis. Part of this redesign is a return to the "deep black" as the ThinkPad color, with the dark grey "thunder black" now being passé again. Also new are the hinges, which now sit behind the base, making the X13 Yoga look more like a regular laptop than before. Extremely noticeable is the "reverse notch" on the screen lid, which is sort of a hump on the lid. You will either hate or love this look, but it is without question that this feature makes opening the screen easier.
The materials have changed as well. With the preceding model, Lenovo used a lot of CFRP (Carbon fiber reinforced plastic). The new model is mostly made out of magnesium alloy: Screen lid and palmrest are magnesium here. The bottom cover is aluminum. The screen is additionally protected from the front with a matte glass panel. All of this combined makes the ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 4 one of the most stable ThinkPad laptops of this generation, as it can not really be twisted or dented anywhere. The stiffness of the hull is greatly improved compared with the earlier model. A small caveat: The black, rubberized surfaces, which feel high quality, get dirty fast.
The ThinkPad convertible can not be opened up with one finger. On the flip side, the wide hinges of the ThinkPad Yoga allow for an opening angle of 360 degrees, enabling the transformation into a tablet as well as a tent or stand mode. The hinges hold the lid firm, with barely any wiggling.

Compared with the predecessor, the X13 Yoga G4 has increased in weight by 30 g, and it is 0.5 mm thicker. At the same time, it is slightly less wide. The higher weight is probably due to the transition from CFRP to magnesium.
In comparison with the other ThinkPad convertible, the X13 Yoga G4 is still the most lightweight and most compact model. The Dell Latitude 9330 is more lightweight, smaller and thinner.
Connectivity: LTE is prepared with the Lenovo laptop
The ports are placed evenly on both sides of the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga G3. The port selection does not change otherwise, it confirms to the usual business standard and is much better than the Dell Latitude 9330.
Communication
The AX211 by Intel, a WiFi 6E module, delivers a good performance in the ThinkPad X13 Yoga G4, though it is lower when sending data compared with receiving them. This often happens, but it is no problem in everyday use.
Webcam
The webcam receives a huge spec-up compared with the predecessor. The picture quality of the 5 Megapixel camera is better than before, but far from a smartphone.
Security
As a business laptop, the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga G4 has many features in this area. Part of the package are a fingerprint reader in the power button, the infrared camera besides the normal webcam, a dedicated TPM chip, a Kensington lock slot and a Smartcard reader - this feature is something the larger X1 Yoga G8 does not have. Lenovo also included a privacy feature, the mechanical webcam shutter "ThinkShutter".
Accessories
Lenovo puts a compact 65 W GaN charger into the box. Another part of the package: The Wacom digitizer pen, which is integrated into the chassis.
Maintenance
Opening the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga G4 is easy: Five captive screws and a few clips at the back of the chassis, that is all that stands in the way of the operation. On the flip side, there is not much to do in there, as components like the RAM or the WiFi module are soldered down. The M.2 2280 SSD is upgradable, and there is a free M.2 2242 slot for a LTE card - with the necessary antennas already in place. Also, users can easily exchange the screwed in battery or clean the single fan.
Warranty
The Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 4 has a 36 month warranty, which includes Bring in service. For the first year, this warranty package includes Premier support with onsite service, too. This service costs extra if you want it to apply to the whole warranty period. Lenovo gives the battery only a one year warranty. Since this is an enterprise device, the warranty not only applies if you are in Germany, but also internationally, though without any onside service.
Input devices: ThinkPad input devices without any issues
Keyboard
Lenovo puts in a keyboard that is very similar to the predecessor's. It is a 95 % keyboard, meaning the keys measure 10 x 14 mm instead of 11 x 15 mm. Also, the 6th row of the keyboard is reduced in height and the dedicated "Insert" key is missing. For users of that key this is definitely a nuiscance, but overall, it is easy to get used to the smaller layout - and Lenovo keeps the dedicated PageUp/Down buttons.
The key travel of the backlit keyboard is still 1.5 mm. This is less than older ThinkPads, but more than MacBooks or the Dell XPS for example. All in all, the typing experience is great with a soft yet firm stroke, making typing a breeze.
Touchpad and TrackPoint
With 10.5 x 5.5 cm, the touchpad is rather small. The surface is smooth, but it is made out of plastic, even though Lenovo calls it "glass like mylar". It is a clickpad with the click mechanism in the lower part. The mechanism is rather loud, but at least the touchpad does not wobble or rattle. It is not an above average trackpad, but it gets the job done and works flawlessly.
As always, the touchpad is complimented by the ThinkPad TrackPoint, a feature that characterizes the ThinkPad series. The pointing stick is used by putting pressure on the red TrackPoint cap, with the dedicated TrackPoint buttons between the touchpad and keyboard serving as mouse keys. The TrackPoint works as well as ever and better than the size constrained touchpad in some ways, like for Drag&Drop operations.
Touchscreen and Pen
The touchscreen is not as smooth as on laptops with a glossy touchscreen, thanks to the matte screen protector. Touch sensing of the screen, works flawlessly and can recognize up to ten fingers at the same time.
Alternatively to the finger, users can also use the digitizer pen, which Lenovo puts into a silo on the right side of the chassis. The Wacom AES pen is pressure sensitive and gets charged in the silo, making a battery change unnecessary. The pen works without problems, even at the edges of the display. It is ideal for taking notes, but too thin for digital artists who may want to use their pen for longer periods of time. The buttons on the pen are also hard to use, because they are so flat.
Display: Matte touchscreen with high brightness
Lenovo does not change either the aspect ratio (16:10) or the screen size (13.3 inch), all panels are still based on IPS technology and still support touch and pen. Otherwise, many things have changed, Lenovo has made the screen choice easier by taking some options out. One of them is the WQXGA panel, which we tested in the ThinkPad X13 Yoga G3, the Privacy Guard option is gone as well. New is the Low power WUXGA panel, there are now three instead of four screen options:
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), 300 cd/m², 72 % NTSC, semi-glossy
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), 300 cd/m², 72 % NTSC, matte
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), 400 cd/m², 72 % NTSC, matte, Low Power
For a pretty expensive laptop, the choice of screen options is rather thin, as the lack of a high res screen option is especially bad. At least, the WUXGA panel that Lenovo used reaches the promised brightness value of 400 cd/m² with a measured average of 431 cd/m². This panel also has low response times in comparison with the comparison devices. Not so great: The matte screen protector takes away from the billiance of the colors.

Ex factory the screen has a noticeable yellowish tint according to Calman, though it is even visible with the naked eye. The high average deltaE of 5.3 shows how big the differences compared with "neutral" colors are. After a calibration with the X-Rite i1 Pro 2 and the i1Profiler, the yellowish tint was gone. The average deltaE post calibration of 2 is not perfect, but certainly a lot better than before. The color profile we created is available to download for free, as always.
Color gamut of 96 % of the sRGB gamut is not enough to call it "complete coverage". For photo editing, this panel is not quite ideal.
Users have no trouble with reflections, as the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 4 has a matte screen surface and brightness of above 400 cd/m², making the screen viewable even in a bright environment.

Performance: X13 Yoga G4 weak under load
The predecessor Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga G3 was limited to the U15 Intel chips - with the successor X13 Yoga Gen 4, Lenovo now offers performat P28 chips with up to 14 cores. Specifically, buyers have the choice between the Intel Core i5-1335U, i5-1345U, i7-1355U, i7-1365U, i7-1360P and i7-1370P - though at the moment, the P28 variant is not available in Germany. As a GPU, it is either the Iris Xe with 80 EUs or the stronger variant Iris Xe with 96 EUs, depending on the processor.
RAM is always soldered, offered ate 8, 16 or 32 GB LPDDR5-4800. A single M.2 2280 SSD forms the mass storage, with two terabyte being the maximum amount offered by Lenovo.
Testing conditions
While other manufacturers utilize their own software to regulate the CPU power consumption and power profiles, Lenovo depends on the built in Windows tools with the ThinkPad laptops. Accordingly, the three power modes are set viawith the Windows energy settings:
- Best battery life: PL1 12 Watt / PL2 12 Watt
- Balanced: PL1 12 Watt / PL2 35 Watt
- Best performance: PL1 15 Watt / PL2 45 Watt
"PL" is short for "power limit", with the power limit 1 describing the maximum power consumption under sustained load and the power limit 2 defining the maximum boost performance.
The bottom line: The Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga G4 is able to cool a maximum of 15 W under sustained load, at least the tested version - models with the P28 CPU have a stronger cooling system with a second fan, possibly enabling a higher power consumption, higher fan noise, temperatures as well as better CPU performance.
Processor
The Intel Core i5-1335U is a U15 processor of the "Raptor-Lake" generation. This processor has a total of ten cores, with two performant P cores and eight efficient E cores. The clock rates are between 1.3 and 4.6 GHz (P cores) and 0.9 and 3.4 GHz (E cores). For comparisons with other CPUs, you can use the CPU comparison list.
Overall, the performance of the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga G4 is disappointing. The boost performance is high and better compared with the preceding model, but when it comes to sustained load on all cores, the newer model is slower than the older ThinkPad X13 Yoga G3 zurück. At least the performance is high in everyday office usage, but the X13 Yoga Gen 4 once again demonstrates that the recent Intel CPUs are simply not made for a power consumption lower than 25 W. Under sustained load, the affordable ThinkPad L13 Yoga G4 is much faster as well, it is only slower than the Intel model in single core load.
CPU performance is not limited when the system runs on battery power.

GPU
The Iris Xe with 80 EUs is the slower variant of the recent integrated Intel GPU. Its performance in the ThinkPad X13 Yoga G4 is not really good, despite the memory of the laptop running in the Quad channel mode. This iGPU is not meant for bigger tasks, but it is sufficient in everyday office usage. Games are not possible, except for older titles.

Energy management: New ThinkPad with better battery life
Power consumption
With the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga G3, the high power consumption was a problem. The newer ThinkPad X13 Yoga G4 is different, as the idle consumption is much lower - though with the caveat that it has a lower screen resolution.
The maximum consumption of 66.2 W means that the 65 W charger is not quite sufficient. This however is only true for maximum load, the consumption is quickly reduced, keeping the battery from being discharged.

Battery life
The ThinkPad X13 Yoga G3 had only a single battery option, there are two for the X13 Yoga G4: Lenovo offers both an internal 41 Wh battery and an internal 54.7 Wh battery. We are testing the variant with more battery capacity, meaning the battery capacity has slightly increased compared with the predecessor. Battery life in the WiFi test (150 cd/m² screen brightness) meanwhile is much improved. 11.5 hours is a very good result, none of the other convertibles is better. Even with the maximum screen brightness, the ThinkPad still lasts nine hours. Users can expect a full day of office work in terms of battery life here.

Pros
Cons
Verdict: Convertible with many strengths and one big weakness
A platform update and a new design: The Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 4 brings many new features. Overall, it is a good rework if this laptop line, but at a critical junction, the deficits of Intel's current crop of chips are once again laid bare.
First to the positives: The new magnesium chassis appeals to us with its higher stability and haptic quality compared with the previous design. Components like the webcam and speakers may not be great, but their improvement is undeniable. The Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga G4 comes with plenty of connectivity options, which includes many ports, prepared WWAN antennas and a integrated digitizer pen. The laptop had ThinkPad-typical input devices, a matte, bright screen and a long battery life, which should suffice for a whole work day - greatly improving on one of the predecessor's weakpoints.
Soldered RAM may be excusable with the compact design, but upgradable RAM would still be desirable for a business device. One point of criticism is the lack of a truly premium screen option, Lenovo limits the X13 Yoga G4 to the WUXGA resolution and sRGB color gamut. The SSD of our review device is also slow, but this does not necessarily apply to all X13 Yoga variants.
The big problem of this model: CPU performance. If a laptop is slower than its predecessor under sustained load, this is not a good sign. Once again, it is obvious that the Raptor-Lake CPUs are not really suited for a low power limit of just 15 W like with the Lenovo ThinkPad. Too much performance-potential is lost. Luckily, the X13 Yoga G4 is an ultra-mobile convertible, making the lacking performance under load more of a nuisance than a deal-breaker.
Long battery life, but underachieving performance: The Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga G4 demonstrates the weakness of Intel Raptor Lake once again.
An important competitor of the Lenovo ThinkPad is the Dell Latitude 9330, which is more compact and thinner, but weak in terms of the port selection. Another rival could be the HP EliteBook x360 830 G10, but we have not tested that one yet. As far as internal competition goes, there is the ThinkPad L13 Yoga G4, which runs quieter and faster under sustained load thanks to the AMD CPUs, as well as the ThinkPad X1 Yoga G8, which is more of a premium device with better screen options and speakers.
