Whether you're in it for the brain-tickling strategy, or you're simply looking for an adventurous game to take a break from all the MMORPG and FPS games, the Steam Strategy Fest has something for you to explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate. This includes three of the best 4X games around.

1. Northgard - 70% off

Northgard has just about everything you might expect from a Viking-inspired real-time strategy game with strong 4X influence. This RTS does a great job of managing difficulty and beginner-friendliness, welcoming new players, but demanding a degree of patience and strategic thinking to properly master.

After your forces land on the continent of Northgard, you will need to find food, build and maintain a community, and grow your influence. That said, there isn't one fixed way to play Northgard, with its various clans and their inherent bonuses granting players substantial flexibility to play the game their own way, optimising for farming and trading or warring and conquering.

Northgard is on sale on Steam for US$8.99 until September 4.

2. Stellaris - 70% off

For fans of grander, non-terrestrial RTS games, Stellaris should be a go-to. Players take position at the helm of an empire that has just developed interstellar travel capabilities. Where things go from there is anyone's guess. As you grow your empire, you can trade, make pacts, or dominate the opposition.

Stellaris features multiplayer gameplay and leans heavily on procedural generation to create planets, galaxies, species, and even space monsters in both multiplayer and single-player gameplay. While the procedural generation helps keep the game interesting, the level of depth in its empire customisation mechanics and interactions between different races and civilisations is what makes the game special.

Stellaris is on sale for US$11.99 during the Steam Strategy Fest.

3. Scythe: Digital Edition - 60% off

Scythe: Digital Edition is the PC version of a table-top boardgame that puts players in Europa in an alternate-reality version of the year 1920 — an alternate reality wherein WWI is fought with mechs. The First World War has taken its toll on the world. It's up to the player to lead one of five factions to victory by conquering The Factory, an independent city-state that manufactures the mechs that will lead to victory.

One of the key mechanics in Scythe: DIgital Edition is the asymmetry, which sees each player start with different resources and a different landscape. Players must use what they are given to their advantage and grow their civilisation's power by developing technology and economy, gathering and managing resources, and facing off against other factions.

Being a tabletop boardgame spin-off, Scythe feature both online PvP and split-screen PvP for flexible multiplayer fun.

Scythe: Digital Edition is just US$7.99 during the Steam Strategy Fest, until September 4.
