Teclast M50 Pro review: Lots of tablet for under US$200

Is more really needed? You can spend hundreds of dollars on an Android tablet. Or in the case of the Teclast M50 Pro, less than US$200. Despite its low price, the 10.1-inch Android 13 tablet offers a surprisingly comprehensive range of features and solid mid-range performance.
Teclast M50 Pro

Chinese manufacturer Teclast is now introducing an affordable Android tablet in the M50 Pro. At officially US$199.99, it has a lot going for it. The 10.1-inch M50 Pro has a lightweight metal casing, a resolution of 1920 x 1200 on an IPS panel with a nominal brightness of up to 350 nits and an eight-core Unisoc T616.

In addition to 8 GB RAM and 256 GB internal memory, which can be expanded via microSD card, the M50 Pro supports Bluetooth 5.1 as well as Wi-Fi 5 and can also go online via LTE mobile via its dual-SIM slot. A 13 MP main camera, a 5 MP selfie camera and a 6000 mAh battery round off the features. Read on to find out whether the M50 Pro can hold its own against the competition.

Case - M50 Pro with lightweight aluminium chassis

Optically, you can't tell that the Teclast tablet costs less than US$200. The M50 Pro is housed in a 7.8 millimeter thin, well-made metal chassis and weighs just 435 grams, making it very light for a tablet of its size. The metal surface on the back is only interrupted by a narrow plastic band that stretches almost across the entire width of the tablet above the 13 MP main camera. A protective film is applied to the IPS display ex works.

The 10.1-inch device, which comes in a subtle turquoise color called Aqua, can be twisted and pressed in with relatively little effort, which elicits slight creaking noises. Overall, the tablet is robust enough for everyday use. However, there is no IP certification.

Thanks to the screen frame, which is around 1 centimeter wide on all sides, the M50 Pro has a solid display-to-surface ratio of 83 percent and can be held comfortably in the hands without accidental input. The 5 MP selfie camera fits unobtrusively into the frame.

Equipment - 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage in the Teclast tablet

With 8 GB LPDDR4 RAM and 256 GB eMMC 5.1 flash, the M50 Pro's memory equipment is quite generous. Storage can be increased up to 1 TB via the microSD slot. Android 13 and the preinstalled apps occupy 21 GB of the 256 GB of storage space, leaving 235 GB free.

Teclast advertises 16 GB of RAM, but this is an extension in the form of a swap file in the data storage, which works much slower than the RAM and therefore only offers real added value in exceptional cases.

The tablet's USB-C port works at USB 2.0 speed and supports USB OTG. Moreover, there is a 3.5 mm jack and four speakers, two of which are distributed on each of the two short sides. Teclast has not installed an NFC module in the M50 Pro.

microSD card reader

The microSD card slot of the M50 Pro achieves a reasonable copy rate of 27 MB/s together with our Angelbird AV Pro V60 reference card. It is also fast for this price range in the Cross Platform Disk Test. If you insert a microSD card, it blocks the second nano-SIM slot.

Software - Android 13 without bloatware

The Teclast M50 Pro runs largely stock Android 13, which is why neither third-party apps nor tools from Teclast itself are installed. The tablet supports DRM Widevine L1 and can thus play streams in HD quality.

At the time of review (end of September 2023), the Android security patches were from July 2023 and thus no longer completely up to date. It remains unclear how long Teclast will provide its tablet with Android updates.

Communication and GNSS - Dual SIM with LTE

The M50 Pro is able to establish mobile phone connections via 2G, 3G and LTE. The frequency coverage is not too great, but shouldn't cause any reception issues, at least not in Europe. VoLTE and WLAN calling are supported.

The Teclast tablet also communicates wirelessly via Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 5. In Wi-Fi, it achieves solid and stable transfer rates with our Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 reference router, reaching a peak of 372 MBit/s.

The M50 Pro pinpoints its location via the GPS (L1), Glonass (L1), Beidou (B1, B1C) and Galileo (E1) satellite systems. Indoors, positioning takes a little longer and is not particularly accurate at 15 meters. Outdoors, the tablet gets a signal much faster and establishes its position at an accuracy of 3 meters.

To test the tablet's real-world tracking capabilities, we took it on a short test bike ride along with a Garmin Venu 2 smartwatch for comparison. The M50 Pro shows a few inaccuracies here, but proves that it is quite suitable overall for navigational tasks.

Cameras - 13 MP camera and depth sensor

Photo with the selfie camera
Photo with the selfie camera

On the back of the M50 Pro is a 13 MP camera with LED flash. Although there are two lenses, the one further inside is a depth sensor only. It has a resolution of 0.3 MP and is used by the tablet to collect additional data for bokeh/blur effects when taking portrait shots.

The 13 MP camera takes rather dark photos that appear quite pale due to a low dynamic range. Subjects with very bright and dark areas are particularly difficult for the camera, as the background sometimes literally disappears. In optimal lighting conditions, the main camera is able to flesh out image details properly, but always reveals image noise when you zoom in. It does quite well in low-light shots.

Videos have a similar image quality to the photos and can be recorded in a maximum of 1080p at 30 fps. Other supported resolutions are 720p at 30 fps and 480p at 30 fps.

The selfie camera has a resolution of 5 MP and did not impress in our tests. Even in strong, good light, portrait photos are pale, grainy and out of focus. The selfie camera records videos in a maximum of 720p at 30 fps.

In full studio lighting, the main camera reproduces the colors of the ColorChecker test chart relatively accurately. The white balance is the best, while the colors deviate more from the reference colors. The main camera doesn't capture the test chart very sharply, even in optimal lighting conditions.

Accessories and warranty - 10-watt power supply unit included in the scope of delivery

The included 10-watt power supply
The included 10-watt power supply

The M50 Pro's scope of delivery includes a modular 10-watt power supply, a USB cable (type A to C), a SIM tool, a warranty card and a quick start guide. Teclast also offers a folio case (around US$15) that can simultaneously serve as a protective cover and stand for the tablet.

Teclast provides a 12-month warranty on the M50 Pro. This may differ from country to country, so interested buyers should double check before purchasing.

Input devices & operation - 2D Face Unlock, but no fingerprint sensor

The Teclast M50 Pro implements inputs quickly on its IPS panel. The tablet's precise touchscreen has a touch sampling rate of 120 Hz and runs at a refresh rate of 60 Hz, which is typical for the class.

The M50 Pro does not have a fingerprint reader. Instead, the tablet can be unlocked either via pattern, PIN or password. Or you can use the only biometric authentication option, the 2D facial scan. It takes a second to log in, but works reliably.

Subpixel grid

The 10.1-inch IPS panel of the Teclast M50 Pro has a resolution of 1920 x 1200, which corresponds to the 16:10 format. The tablet does not have a brightness sensor.

The M50 Pro is a long way from the nominal 350 nits claimed by Teclast. Although the panel produces a high-contrast display in our tests, its average brightness of 233.7 cd/m² and maximum brightness of 252 cd/m² are around 100 nits lower than specified. This is nowhere near as bright as all other tablets in the comparison field and is therefore primarily recommended as an indoor tablet.

The M50 Pro does not use PWM for brightness control and is thus suitable for sensitive users.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM not detected

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 18722 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured.

Measurement series at a fixed zoom level and different brightness settings

In the display settings, colors and contrast can either be adjusted manually or regulated automatically. The M50 Pro delivers the best picture quality when automatic contrast is selected and the color temperature is set to warm. At over 8000 K, the color temperature is still a little too high, but other devices don't fare any better here either.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.

Due to its not-too-high panel brightness, the Teclast M50 Pro is only suitable for outdoor use to a limited extent. Owing to the strong reflections, it can be difficult to read content from the viewing-angle-stable screen sometimes, even in a shady spot.

Performance - M50 Pro with Unisoc T616

The Teclast M50 Pro comes with 8 GB LPDDR4 RAM, the Unisoc T616 and its ARM Mali G57 MP1. The eight-core SoC came onto the market in 2019, can run everyday apps smoothly and ensures mostly lag-free operation. The Unisoc T616 combines two Cortex A75 cores that clock up to 2 GHz with 6 Cortex A55 cores that clock up to 1.8 GHz.

In the synthetic benchmarks, the M50 Pro is similarly fast as the Honor Pad 8, which uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 4G. However, both are surpassed by the Telekom T Tablet (MediaTek Dimensity 700) and the Xiaomi Redmi Pad (Mediatek Helio G99).

Teclast uses eMMC flash memory for the M50 Pro, which can only manage low transfer rates due to its design. In everyday use, this is occasionally noticeable through longer app loading times. Some of the competition is not faster here either.

Gaming - Current games run with restrictions

The M50 Pro runs games with stereo sound from four speakers. However, you often have to reduce the details so that current games such as PUBG Mobile run smoothly. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide concrete statements about the frame rates at this point, as the Teclast tablet refused to provide our Gamebench test tool with the corresponding FPS data.

Temperature

The M50 Pro stays cool during use, does not heat up significantly under prolonged load and is thus pleasant to the touch at all times. The tablet also has the internal heat dissipation well under control. As the 3DMark Wild Life stress tests show, our test device suffers only slight drops in performance after rendering the test scenes 20 times.

Power management - 6000 mAh battery and over 3 hours recharging time

Power consumption

Teclast includes a 10-watt power supply (5V/2A) with the M50 Pro. In testing, the tablet's 6000 mAh battery is fully recharged in 3:34 hours. The battery reached 80 per cent capacity after 2:24 hours and 90 per cent after 2:43 hours.

The manufacturer does not provide precise information on the maximum charging power of its tablet. However, when connected to a 65-watt power supply from Ugreen, we were able to get around 15 minutes less charging time out of the M50 Pro.

Battery life

The M50 Pro's battery life is only average, which is due to its comparatively small battery. Both during simulated web surfing and playback of our test video in a continuous loop, the tablet remains below the 10-hour mark. But in practice, the tablet should reach one or two days of use before needing to be recharged.
