The Best 17-inch Office Laptops

July 2023 Update. Looking for a portable replacement for your old desktop computer? Affordable office notebooks with large 17-inch displays feel right at home on your desk at home and more often than not offer more than enough performance for everyday tasks such as word processor or browsing the web. Find our favorites below.

Office laptops with large 17-inch displays are great for all users who prefer a notebook over a desktop to save precious space and who have fairly moderate performance expectations for their everyday tasks (browsing the web, office applications, watching videos, …). The built-in 17-inch display can be an adequate replacement for an external display while still allowing for portable use, for example outdoors in one’s backyard. Price is also an important factor for these machines, and around 1,000 Euros are usually the limit. Please also consider the following top 10 lists when looking for a device:

Editor’s Comments

Not only are the lines between multimedia and office use blurred in this segment, but you can also find budget gaming laptops with up to a GeForce RTX 3060 or RTX 4050 alongside laptops with integrated graphics or entry-level graphics solutions, as inexpensive gaming laptops with a large screen are often very well suited for any work use. They often feature good input devices, sturdy cases and powerful hardware, while most also offer different performance profiles so that quiet operation is also ensured.

aptops with an integrated GPU or entry-level graphics card are equally suitable for playing media, simple editing of pictures or videos and of course for office applications like Word or Excel, as well as for surfing the web. If PC gaming is part of your application spectrum, you should look for laptops with Geforce RTX 3050 (Ti), RTX 3060, Radeon RX 6600M, RTX 4050 and up. You can find corresponding models in our top list of current budget gaming laptops.

1st - LG Gram 17 (2022)

LG Gram 17 (2022)
LG Gram 17 (2022)

The LG Gram 17 (2022), which is very light at 1.35 kg, takes first place in our top list. The 17 incher in 16:10 format finally gets a matt display, which is especially advantageous in outdoor use. Once you have the LG Gram with the dimensions of 380 x 262 millimeters in your hands, the low weight feels surreal. However, light plastic is not used here, but a light metal construction made of magnesium.

Compared to the predecessor of this featherweight series, quite a few things have been updated, including the design. The new Alder Lake processor (Intel Core i5-1240p in our review) doubles the performance, while the keyboard has been significantly improved and the display is now matte.

The 80 Wh battery is also sized large enough for everyday office use, allowing long battery runtimes of over 11 hours when web surfing and 16 hours when streaming video. In addition, the matte screen now covers 87 percent of the AdobeRGB color space, so nothing stands in the way of professional image editing. On the other hand, there are shortcomings such as poor maintenance options, noticeable CPU throttling and that the higher performance is bought by a louder fan in load scenarios. Due to the low weight, the construction and the materials used, the stiffness of the case is still far from optimal.

A LG Gram 17 variant, which is equipped with a i5-1240P, 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB NVMe SSD, can be purchased on Amazon US for just under $1,100.

2nd – HP Envy 17 (2023)

HP Envy 17 (2023)
HP Envy 17 (2023)

An office-multimedia hybrid in the 17-inch laptop class is the HP Envy 17, which is related to the HP 17 and HP 470. The chassis of the 17-incher, which is only 19.6 mm thin and weighs 2.55 kg, is made of sturdy aluminum, a full-size SD card reader, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, three USB-A ports, but no LAN port.

The HP Envy 17 is a classic office notebook in the 17-inch class and offers a good keyboard, low emissions, and a good 60 Hz display that is, however, highly reflective.

Our test model is equipped with a 4K display that gets sufficiently bright with 385 cd/m² and offers 98% DCI-P3. The basic configuration still includes an FHD IPS panel with 100% sRGB and a specified 300 cd/m². The Core i7-1255U offers very good office performance that is almost double that of the predecessor, while the HP Envy 17 remains quite quiet and cool. However, it can get loud up to 48 dB(A) when gaming on models with RTX 2050. However, the 56 Wh battery only lasts 4.5 hours (8 hours in the direct predecessor) and the working memory is soldered.

At the time of writing, various configurations of HP Envy 17 are available on HP's webstore, prices starting at $800.

3rd – Acer Nitro 5 AN517-55 (2023)

Acer Nitro 5 AN517-55
Acer Nitro 5 AN517-55

Not a typical office workhorse that nevertheless meets the usage criteria of our 17-inch office top list. Not only the looks are a bit unusual for the office desk, but the inner values are also perfectly suited for gaming during lunch breaks, as an Nvidia Geforce RTX 4050 with DLSS3 support is installed.

While we took a closer look at the configuration with the Intel Core i5-12500H in our review, we unfortunately also found negative points, because the 3 kg 17-inch laptop gets tremendously loud with up to 67.5 dB(A) under load and does not remain silent even in pure office mode.

The matte FullHD IPS display of the Acer Nitro 5 offers 144 Hz, but it lacks brightness (257 cd/m²) and color fidelity. The RGB-illuminated keyboard is pleasant and the battery life of 9.5 hours is pretty good.

The display gets sufficiently bright with 330 nits and offers a high color space coverage, but it is reflective, which is very annoying in backlight and especially outdoors. The Core i5-1135G7 offers good office performance, while the HP Envy 17 remains fairly quiet and cool. The 56 Wh battery lasts just under 8 hours after all, and the input devices can be described as good.

In the USA, Amazon offers some variants of Acer Nitro 5 AN517-55, with prices starting at around US$ 1,110.

4th – Lenovo Legion 5 17 AMD

Lenovo Legion 5 17 AMD
Lenovo Legion 5 17 AMD

The Lenovo Legion 5 17 places itself on the borderline of gaming, multimedia and office. It comes with a FHD gaming-ready Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 (RTX 3060 in our review), offers a good full-size keyboard, and a matte, calibrated FullHD display with a fast 144 Hz refresh rate that can also increase office work flow. One finds many USB ports, an SD card reader and Gigabit Ethernet.

The price of €999 (~$1,053) for the Legion 5 17, with a strong AMD Ryzen 5 5600H, 144 Hz screen and the quiet operation is decidedly good. It can be used for office, gaming and multimedia, not least thanks to the matte, calibrated screen.

Currently, the Legion 5 17 AMD (Ryzen 7 5600H, RTX 3060) is available on Amazon for $1,999.

5th – Schenker Work 17

Schenker Work 17
Schenker Work 17

The Schenker Work 17 is primarily an office notebook, but with multimedia ambitions thanks to the quality FullHD IPS display, which can also be used outdoors without any problems thanks to the matte finish and 390 nits brightness. However, the speakers are quite weak. At 2.2 kg, it is pleasantly light considering its size, and the RGB-illuminated keyboard is excellent.

The mostly aluminum case is sturdy, the Core i7-11370H's performance is high, and the battery life of 10 hours is long. In addition, the maintenance options are user-friendly. The Work 17 stays very cool, but can get loud under load. Thunderbolt 4, microSD card reader and LAN port are present.

The Schenker Work 17 does well in office use, thanks to a high-quality display and good input devices. Furthermore, it offers a long battery life, Thunderbolt 4 and can be upgraded easily.

Schenker's devices are not yet available in the North America.

6th – Asus TUF Gaming F17 FX706HM

Asus TUF Gaming F17 FX706HM
Asus TUF Gaming F17 FX706HM

The Asus TUF Gaming F17 has a fast Alder-Lake CPU with the Core i5-12500H or Core i7-12700H in our test, as well as a strong RTX-3060 GPU. The case with a reinforcing metal plate in the lid is stable and Thunderbolt 4 is on board. Furthermore, the refresh rate of 144 Hz is fast and the battery life of 7.5 hours of the 2.5 kg 17-incher is quite long.

The maintenance options of the Asus TUF Gaming F17 are just as decent as the performance, but the display is too dark and the build quality is poor.

The touchpad is a bit small, but has dedicated buttons. The color space coverage and color accuracy are also on a low level, while the response times of the matte Full HD IPS display are slow. WLAN speeds are also slow, and there is no card reader. The emissions are also quite high.

It costs around $1,579 for a variant of the ASUS TUF Gaming F17, which is equipped a Core i7-12700H and a RTX 3060, on Amazon US.

7th – Gigabyte G7 KE

Gigabyte G7 KE
Gigabyte G7 KE

The Gigabyte G7 KE from 2022 is the Intel version of the Gigabyte A7 and therefore relies on the same robust plastic chassis, while the entire barebone is also used by manufacturers such as Schenker and Captiva.

Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3060 with a 115W TGP handles graphics-intensive tasks, while the main computing operations are performed by the fast Alder Lake Core i5-12500H, resulting in good value for money.

The matte 16:9 IPS display with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels is very fast with 300 Hz and just bright enough for outdoor use with 300 nits. Contrast and colors are convincing even without calibration.

We found the keyboard of the 2.6 kg 17-incher with narrow screen edges to be good, but the battery life of 5:17 hours is lower average. A very loud 59 dB(A) can also be reached under load. Thunderbolt 4 is installed, but without Power Delivery. In return, there is a microSD card reader.

Gigabyte's heavy G7 KE laptop offers a very high performance, a very fast, pre-calibrated 300 Hz FHD display and solid input devices. However, the inexpensive gaming laptop gets very loud during tasks away from office.

Currently, the device is not yet available in North America.

8th – Gigabyte A7 X1

Gigabyte A7 X1
Gigabyte A7 X1

The Gigabyte A7 X1 is based on a stable plastic case from Schenker and also here gaming aspects are mixed with office suitability. A GeForce RTX 3060 is used as the graphics unit (an RTX 3070 in our detailed review) and the processor is the strong AMD Ryzen 7 5800H or Ryzen 9 5900HX in our review. Thus, you get a very powerful package with high power limits for CPU and GPU at a low price.

Furthermore, the matte FullHD IPS display convinces with its fast 144 Hz, 320 nits brightness, a high contrast and accurate colors after calibration. The keyboard of the bulky and 2.5 kg heavy 17.3-inch behemoth is very good, but the battery life is short with about 4 1/2 hours and it can get quite loud under load. You also have to do without an SD card reader and Thunderbolt 4.

The Gigabyte A7 X1 is bulky, but it offers an extraordinary performance, a high-quality 144 Hz display and good input devices for a relatively low price. In return, the 17-incher can get quite loud.

At the time of writing, it seems to be hard to find out the Gigabyte A7 X1 in the US market.

9th – HP Pavilion Gaming 17

HP Pavilion Gaming 17
HP Pavilion Gaming 17

The 2.8 kg HP Pavilion Gaming 17 is already a good choice for the low list price of 980 euro. Many aspects are on an average level, but the matte FullHD display with just under 320 nits of brightness, a 144 Hz refresh rate and fast response times is well equipped for both office tasks and gaming.

The emissions are kept within limits and the keyboard is also good for everyday office use, only the arrow keys have been realized in a small version. Thunderbolt is not available, but USB-C with Power Delivery and DisplayPort, as well as an SD card reader and Gigabit Ethernet.

The performance of the Core i5-11300H is more than sufficient for office work, while the installed RTX 3050 Ti can also handle somewhat more graphics-heavy tasks.

While the not-so-bright display is sharp, the letters and symbols are all the more difficult to read due to the grey lettering on the silver keys. This makes it difficult to work in the dark or outdoors. In addition, you should always stay close to a power socket, because the 32 Wh small battery in the 17-inch case only lasts a scant 4 hours in WLAN mode.

At the time of writing, our review configuration doesn't seem to be available in the United States.

10th – MSI Katana GF76 12UGS

MSI Katana GF76 12UGS
MSI Katana GF76 12UGS

The decisive factor for MSI Katana GF76 is the good price-performance ratio. Because you get a very high performance thanks to the latest Core i5-12500H from the Alder Lake generation and an RTX-3050 graphics unit for only 900 Euros (in our detailed review, it is equipped with an RTX 3070 Ti and a Core i7-12700H).

On the other hand, the keyboard is a bit spongy and has small keys, the 144 Hz FullHD IPS display is quite dark and has a low color gamut coverage, while the fans even spin while idling.

The MSI Katana GF76 offers high system performance at a small price, but you have to make concessions especially in the important points for an office notebook, the display, the keyboard and the noise development.
